British Judge Orders Woman Suffering From Cancer to Have Operation

A judge has ordered that a woman suffering from cancer must have an operation - even though she has indicated she does not want it.

Sir Nicholas Wall, the head of the High Court Family Division, has given permission to doctors to use force if necessary to make sure the woman has the surgery.

The 55-year-old woman - named in court only as PS - has learning problems and is incapable of making decisions about her own healthcare.

Doctors at her local NHS Foundation Trust are convinced she needs an operation to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes or she will die.

But the woman, said to have a "significant impairment in intellectual functioning", is terrified of hospitals and needles and has either failed to turn up for treatment, or refused to have it.
