Maggie Gyllenhaal deemed 'too old' to play a 55-year-old's lover?

Maggie Gyllenhaal says she struggled landing the role of a lover to an older man because she's in her late 30's.

"There are things that are really disappointing about being an actress in Hollywood that surprise me all the time," she told TheWrap Magazine. "I'm 37 and I was told recently I was too old to play the lover of a man who was 55. It was astonishing to me. It made me feel bad, and then it made me feel angry, and then it made me laugh."

The actress never revealed the name of the movie she wasn't chosen for, but did admit that being denied the part gave her a range of emotions. "It made me feel bad, and then it made me feel angry, and then it made me laugh," she said.

Despite her recent diss, Gyllenhaal told the publication that she still believes women in the industry are on the up and up. "A lot of actresses are doing incredible work right now, playing real women, complicated women," she said. "I don't feel despairing at all. And I'm more looking with hope for something fascinating."

Gyllenhaal won a Golden Globe this year for her leading role in "The Honourable Woman."
