Jose Canseco accidentally shoots his finger off

Former MLB player Jose Canseco sustained a "serious hand injury" Tuesday when he accidentally shot himself while cleaning a gun in his Las Vegas home, NBC News reports.

Canseco was cleaning the handgun Tuesday afternoon when it went off and damaged one of his fingers, according to NBC. He told police he didn't realize the gun was loaded.

Police said there was nothing suspicious about the incident and no alcohol was involved.

Canseco's girlfriend, Leila Knight, posted a message to his Twitter feed Tuesday night. "Thank you all for the kind words and prayers," she wrote. "Jose is in still surgery and will be ok. Please pray for his finger !!"
