Learning you have cancer is bad enough, but it's even worse when it takes two whole years for the doctors to make a diagnosis. Unfortunately, that's exactly what happened to Fran Drescher.
"I was misdiagnosed for a perimenopausal condition I didn't have, when I actually had uterine cancer," the actress tells FNM in an exclusive interview. "It took me two years and eight doctors to get a proper diagnosis."
Drescher would go on to write a best-selling book about the experience, but she soon realized she could be doing so much more to help prevent similar misdiagnoses from ever affecting another woman. With that, the Cancer Schmancer Movement was born.
"What I discovered was that what happened to me, by means of misdiagnosis and mistreatment, has happened to millions of Americans, and I quickly realized that the book was not the end, but just the beginning of what's become a life mission." say Drescher.
Today, Drescher celebrates 16 years of being cancer-free, but she'll always be a voice for awareness. For example, Drescher's Cancer Schmancer Movement is also focusing a lot of energy on their Detox Your Home initiative in the hopes of making people more aware of the environmental causes of cancer — and how to avoid them.
"Let's not get cancer in the first place," she smiles. "How's that for a cure?"
