It is no longer be fashionable to leave a little something to the imagination.
Scandalous looks are reigning supreme as stars show more and more skin on the red carpet, from dresses that barely skim bottoms to necklines that plunge to -- and sometimes past -- the belly button.
Charlize Theron is the latest celeb to dare to wear something all the way down to there. The Oscar-winning actress actress debuted a white halter dress with a neckline plunging to her waist last night at the Gotham Independent Film Awards, leading one web site to declare “it looked like a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen.”
But Theron is right on trend. Each week more and more celebs are clamoring for the cameras by showing off their assets. The 19 year old Disney starlet Demi Lovato left little to the imagination recently in a Mouret Compeyson violet stretch-crepe gown at the Latin Grammy Awards that also plunged to her navel and exposed nearly all of the teenager’s chest.
Gossip Girl Blake Lively recently attended her show’s 100th episode party at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City in a sheer paneled Marchesa gown that not only showed off plenty of the 24 year old’s cleavage, but had a peekaboo design around the back that allowed pretty much all of Lively’s backside to peep through.
“The plunging neckline is the latest trend -- stars of all ages are showing off the look, everyone from Selena Gomez and Lea Michele to Charlize Theron. While hemlines have dropped, the focus is showing off skin in a big way,” explains HollywoodLife.com Fashion Editor Katrina Mitzeliotis. “Thanks to sheer panels and cutouts, stars are also getting strategic with the way they're showing off.”
But what effect does baring almost all have on the young girls at home who are watching their idols show more and more of their stuff?
“It normalizes showing more skin. After all if these young girls look up to the starlets," says clinical psychologist Jeffrey Gardere. "If America and the starlets say it's okay to show skin, the young girls who idolize them will think it is appropriate and glamorous also."
Showing off skin is also another way for celebrities to make sure they stay in the spotlight in a news cycle that changes every few minutes, explains Racked editor Lilit Marcus.
“In an increasingly tabloid-soaked world, where thousands of blogs run pictures of celebrity outfits every day, it gets harder and harder for stars to stand out and be shocking," Marcus said. "Showing a lot of skin is a quick, efficient way to make sure you're the lead photo instead of the tenth."
From Kardashians -- whom we expect to show more skin than the average American -- to America’s sweetheart Selena Gomez, no one in Hollywood seems to be immune to the trend.
“There will always be skin on the red carpet," Fashionista Editor in Chief Leah Chernikoff tells Fox411. "That's the red carpet is for, to show off that toned body you worked out five hours a day for.”
