Puerto Rico police probe dog remains found in 43 bags

Published May 16, 2016

Associated Press

Authorities in Puerto Rico say they are investigating the deaths of multiple dogs whose parts were found in 43 plastic bags dumped near a road.

Police said Monday that an anonymous call led them to the north coastal town of Rio Grande just east of the capital of San Juan. They said it is unclear exactly how many dogs were found dead.

The find raises new concerns about the well-being of animals in the U.S. territory. Puerto Rico officials have pushed to end animal cruelty since dozens of dogs and cats were thrown to their deaths from a bridge eight years ago in a case that sparked international outrage.

The government has since launched education campaigns and approved a law to prosecute suspected animal abusers.
