Mexico investigators focusing on police commanders for motive in US embassy car shooting

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

A Mexican official says the attorney general's office is focusing on five federal police commanders to determine the motive for an Aug. 24 ambush on a U.S. embassy vehicle that wounded two CIA officers.

The official, who has knowledge of the case, says commanders ordered 14 officers to lie about what happened. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the case. The question is whether the commanders ordered the attack or received instructions from someone else to fire on the Toyota SUV, the official said Monday.

The armored SUV, traveling south of Mexico City, took 152 bullets, nearly half of them in the driver's and front passenger's windows.

He said the attorney general's office is still investigating whether organized crime was involved in the attack.
