Mexico arrests Zetas cartel member who led migrant smuggling on Texas border

Published January 08, 2015

Associated Press

A top Mexican official says federal authorities have arrested a member of the Zetas drug cartel whose main job was smuggling migrants into the United States.

Federal police chief Monte Alejandro Rubido said Thursday that Fernando Martinez Magana was arrested in the city of Monterrey in northern Mexico.

Rubido says Martinez Magana was based in Nuevo Laredo, across the border from Texas, and that from there he coordinated the smuggling of mainly Central American migrants into the U.S.

He said the 42-year-old Nuevo Laredo native replaced a Zetas leader who was arrested in December 2011 and took over his nickname of "Z16."

Rubido added that Martinez Magana left Nuevo Laredo for Monterrey after authorities closed in on him.
