Only one in four approve of Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto's performance, a new poll suggests.

The president's approval has fallen steadily during the past year from 42 percent last November. Meanwhile, the portion of those disapproving has risen to 66 percent.

This is the lowest level since he took office in December 2012. His six-year term ends in November of 2018.

The poll by the El Universal newspaper surveyed 1,000 people between November 11 and 15 and has a margin of error of 3.5 percent.

Among the factors dragging Pena Nieto down was his invitation to then-Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on August 31.

Approximately 66 percent of those questioned said the president had made a mistake by inviting the then-candidate because of the comments he made during his campaign regarding Mexican immigrants.
