Polish police are searching for the perpetrators of a weekend attack against a Turkish student, the latest incident in a rising number of xenophobic attacks in the country.

The Turkish citizen, a student at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, faced verbal insults and was attacked in the face over the weekend in a shop in the central Polish town, though the incident was not widely reported until several days later.

A university spokesman, Marcin Czyzniewski, told the TVN24 broadcaster on Tuesday that he feared the university could start losing students if people don't feel safe there, and that would hurt the entire community.

Another Turkish student was attacked in recent months in Torun. Last month a Warsaw university lecturer was beaten on a tram for speaking German.
