Germany: TUI fly scraps Saturday flights but will fly Sunday

BERLIN – German airline TUI fly says it will have to cancel most of its flights for the second consecutive day Saturday, but hopes to return to a full schedule Sunday as it deals with a crisis prompted by crews reporting sick.

TUI fly, which belongs to tour operator TUI, said it was canceling 118 flights on Saturday "for operational reasons" but expects to operate 115 flights on Sunday.

The problems come amid uncertainty over the company's future. On Wednesday, struggling Air Berlin said it will hold discussions with TUI and Abu Dhabi-based Etihad on possibly merging part of Air Berlin's business with TUI.

TUI told employee representatives Friday it was putting off a decision on TUI fly's future from Oct. 26 until mid-November and pledged to honor current employees' contracts.
