RIYADH, Saudi Arabia – U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has arrived in Saudi Arabia for meetings with the kingdom's senior royals and talks on Yemen's stalled peace process.
The United States has backed a Saudi-led coalition of nine Arab countries in a nearly 18-month bombing campaign against Shiite Houthi rebels and their allies in Yemen. The Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, in 2014.
The conflict has killed more than 9,000 people, displaced 2.4 million, and destroyed much of the already limited infrastructure in the Arab world's poorest country. U.N.-backed peace talks held in Kuwait collapsed earlier this month.
Kerry is scheduled to meet Wednesday with Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is also Saudi Arabia's defense minister, before a joint meeting Thursday with Gulf ministers, a senior British diplomat and others.
