AMMAN, Jordan – Jordan's state news agency says a gunman who killed five people in a shooting attack on a branch of the national intelligence agency has been sentenced to death.
The Petra agency says the sentence was handed down Thursday by Jordan's state security court.
It did not name the defendant who was previously identified by local media as Mahmoud Masharfeh, 22.
The attacker had opened fire on a local intelligence agency office in the Palestinian refugee camp of Baqaa early on June 6. Several hours later, a suspected was arrested. Jordan's government has portrayed it as a "terrorist attack," suggesting Islamic militancy as a motive, but then clamped a news blackout on the case.
The Baqaa shooting was one of several recent violent incidents linked to Islamic militants in pro-Western Jordan.
