Afghan officials report Taliban attacks in northern province

Afghan officials are reporting sustained Taliban attacks in some districts in the northern province of Kunduz.

Mahmood Danish, a provincial spokesman, says at least one policeman has been killed and four have been wounded in the fighting on Thursday in the Qalay-i-Zal district.

Danish says airstrikes were called in and have helped to repel the insurgents.

In the Dasht-i-Archi district northeast of the city of Kunduz, the provincial capital, the head of the local community council, Abdul Nazar, says the Taliban have been attacking all day and have taken most of the district.

Nazar says no reinforcements or logistical support has arrived in the district.

Last September, the Taliban briefly overran the city of Kunduz and held it for a few days before they were routed by the army.
