AMMAN, Jordan – A senior official says the U.N. will be forced to scale back already limited food distribution in war-scarred Yemen by August because of severe funding shortages.
George Khoury, head of the U.N. Office for Humanitarian Affairs in Yemen, says about 14 million people, or about half the population, suffer from food insecurity at "crisis" or "emergency" levels. The latter is just a step before famine on the food insecurity scale.
The World Food Program currently reaches about 3.5 million people every month.
Khoury said in an interview Wednesday that unless more funding comes in soon, "we don't have enough money to feed even these people."
U.N. aid agencies requested $1.8 billion for Yemen in 2016.
Khoury says only about 20 percent of that money has arrived.
