Croatia's president is holding consultations with political parties after the government fell in a no-confidence vote, amid claims by the opposition that they have gathered enough support to dissolve Parliament and force early elections.

President Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic is expected later Friday to announce whether she will appoint a new prime minister-designate. If no party has a majority in Parliament, the president must dissolve the assembly and schedule the snap vote.

The ruling conservative Croatian Democratic Union have said they want to form a new government with a new prime minister after the ouster of Tihomir Oreskovic's Cabinet on Thursday. Opposition parties insist most lawmakers want early elections.

The government fell after weeks of political deadlock that has stalled much-needed economic reform in the newest European Union member state.
