Police are investigating the deaths of a German exchange student and a Canadian teenager who were struck by a train in the east coast Canadian province of Nova Scotia.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police say they were called to an intersection in the rural town of Lantz early Friday.

An 18-year-old girl, the student from Germany, and a 17-year-old girl from Lantz, Nova Scotia were pronounced dead at the scene.

Cpl. Jennifer Clarke said Friday that a CN freight train was heading south to Halifax when it hit the young women.

She said they have few details on the incident, but police and CN Rail investigators are investigating the cause.
