DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Two Libyan Americans detained in the United Arab Emirates since August 2014 have been acquitted of charges they illegally raised funds for a foreign entity.
The family of Kamal Eldarat, 59, and his son Mohammed, 34, said in a statement the two were found not guilty by the Abu Dhabi Supreme Court's State Security Chamber on Monday.
The two men, who reside in the UAE, were initially charged with supporting terrorist organizations in Libya, but the prosecutor withdrew those charges and they instead faced a maximum 15-year prison sentence on charges of illegally raising funds for Libyan groups.
The defendants said they only raised money for humanitarian supplies for Libya's internationally-backed authorities with documented approval from the UAE government. They say they were tortured while in detention.
