South African authorities say two people have died in violent protests by residents opposing plans to evict them from makeshift homes in an area north of Pretoria.

Witnesses said some roads in Hammanskraal were blockaded with rocks and burning tires Tuesday morning after protests erupted a day earlier.

Citing police, South African media reports say two members of a security company were attacked and killed when they started to tear down shacks where people were living.

Authorities say thousands of people are staying illegally in part of Hammanskraal and officials had obtained a court order to clear the area.
