BUDAPEST, Hungary – Around a dozen journalists at Hungarian news website Vs.hu, including the chief editor, say they have resigned after revelations that the website's publishing company received large sums from foundations set up by the National Bank of Hungary.
The disclosure came after the Supreme Court last month struck down laws meant to shield from scrutiny how the foundations, which received some 250 billion forints ($908 million) from the central bank, have been spending public funds.
Several of the foundations gave New Wave Production Kft. over 500 million forints ($1.8 million) to write articles or produce multimedia content on different issues.
Hungarian media have reported that the publishing company is linked to a cousin of the central bank governor, while staff said the Vs.hu newsroom was unaware of the deals.
