WARSAW, Poland – Poland's foreign minister says the nation's two lawyers assigned to a European human rights body that recently censured Poland will be replaced.
Witold Waszczykowski said Monday Poland will not extend the term of Hanna Suchocka, the First Vice-President of the so-called Venice Commission, or of commission member Krzysztof Drzewicki. Both are experienced lawyers and have served many terms at the commission, a body of experts that advises the Council of Europe on issues related to constitutional law. Their terms expire in April.
They are not aligned with Poland's conservative ruling party.
Last month, the commission rebuked Poland's government over moves that have paralyzed the nation's Constitutional Tribunal.
In line with the commission's rules, neither Suchocka nor Drzewicki had any role in issuing that opinion.
