A live tank shell now is in a safe place — but only after Austrian police scrambled to escape a potentially explosive situation.

State-run broadcaster ORF reports that a police station in the southeastern city of Klagenfurt was evacuated after a man walked in carrying the shell in his hand.

Demining experts called to the scene on Sunday transported the World War II-era ordnance to safe storage ahead of a planned controlled detonation.

ORF cites police officials as saying the man had stored the 30-centimeter (11.8 inch) shell in his garage before taking it to police.
