KABUL, Afghanistan – An Afghan official says clashes the previous night between supporters of two rival northern warlords have killed one person and wounded five.
The incident follows days of simmering tensions.
Ahmad Jawid Bidar, spokesman for the governor of Faryab province, said on Friday the shooting erupted on Thursday in the provincial capital of Maymana, during over the removal of a poster of Second Vice President Abdul Rashid Dostum.
He says supporters of Dostum, an Uzbek, fought with supporters of Atta Mohammad Noor, the acting governor of Balkh province and a Tajik.
Similar demonstrations have been reported in cities across the north, drawing attention to ethnic rivalries in the region.
Anger surfaced earlier this week after a poster of Dostum was removed from the main square of Mazar-i-Sharif, the capital of Balkh.
