Israeli police say a Palestinian stabbed a paramilitary officer in the West Bank city of Hebron before being shot dead.

Police spokeswoman Luba Samri says officers asked the 17-year-old Palestinian to identify himself Saturday and then he pulled out a knife and stabbed one of them in the head. The officer was lightly wounded and other opened fire at the assailant, killing him.

The incident comes amid six months of near-daily Palestinian attacks on Israeli civilians and security forces.

Since mid-September, Palestinians have killed 28 Israelis and two Americans in stabbings, shootings and attacks using cars. At least 186 Palestinians have died by Israeli fire over the same period. Israel says most were assailants and the rest were killed in clashes with Israeli security forces.
