Two prisoners who escaped an Italian jail using a file and knotted bedsheets are back behind bars after four days on the lam.

Authorities on Thursday said the men apparently never made it further than Tivoli, some 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the Rebibbia prison. One man was found in the back of a truck overnight at a roadblock, while the other turned himself into police late Wednesday.

The Romanian inmates escaped from the prison Sunday evening, taking advantage of lighter weekend staffing to saw through the bars of a workroom and then lower themselves to the ground and over the prison wall using knotted sheets.

Unions said low staffing was partly to blame for the breach.
