Saudi police say a retired security official has been shot and killed in the kingdom's south as the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for a shooting there.

Col. Mohammed Harbi said in a statement that the shooting happened early Monday morning in Jazan province, which is on the kingdom's border with Yemen. The statement did not identify the man killed.

Islamic State supporters earlier circulated a claim for responsibility online for the shooting death of Saudi Brig. Gen. Ahmed Faie Asiri in Jazan. The claim, which resembled other communiques by the group, said the man was killed with a silenced pistol.

The Islamic State group, which holds territory in Iraq and Syria, has launched several attacks in Saudi Arabia. The kingdom is part of a U.S.-led coalition targeting the extremists.
