A former Bosnian Serb general who was found dead at the detention unit of the United Nations court that convicted him of genocide died of natural causes.

The Hague-based Yugoslav war crimes tribunal did not elaborate Friday on the exact cause of death of Zdravko Tolimir. It says Dutch authorities carried out an autopsy after he died Monday night.

Tolimir, a 67-year-old former intelligence chief in the Bosnian Serb army, was serving a life sentence after being convicted of genocide and other crimes linked to the 1995 massacre by Bosnian Serb forces of some 8,000 Muslim men in the Srebrenica enclave, the worst mass slaying in Europe since World War II.
