PODGORICA, Montenegro – Montenegro's pro-Western government faces a confidence vote amid disagreements within the ruling coalition and pressure from pro-Russian opposition over a NATO membership bid.
Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic, who is in a dispute with one of the seven parties in the coalition, told lawmakers Monday "those who want to be both in power and in opposition" should be excluded from the Cabinet.
Meanwhile, several hundred opposition supporters have rallied outside the parliament building chanting anti-government slogans.
Djukanovic's move to call a confidence vote is viewed as a political maneuver ahead of parliamentary elections this year.
The pro-Russian opposition has also called for the government to be ousted over an invitation to join NATO last year. Moscow is opposed because Montenegro is a historic Slavic ally in the Balkans.
