Burkina Faso's military court says it has issued an arrest warrant against the former head of the presidential guard for the assassination of the country's former revolutionary leader in 1987.

Col. Sita Sangare, head of the military tribunal, said Wednesday the warrant for Hyacinthe Kafando was issued in August, but made public Wednesday. He said the court is also preparing to file an extradition request to Ivory Coast for ex-president Blaise Compaore, also wanted on charges of involvement in the assassination of former leader Thomas Sankara.

He said Compaore's arrest warrant was issued Dec. 4 and he hopes Ivory Coast will meet the court's demands. Compaore is in exile there after being ousted in a popular uprising in October 2014.

Sangare also said that six people have been detained.
