KHARTOUM, Sudan – A Sudanese opposition party is seeking international help for Sudanese asylum seekers deported from Jordan on Friday, saying they "face serious danger" on arrival in their home country.
The Sudanese Congress party called on Saturday for human rights organizations, activists and "political forces" in and outside Sudan to protect the deportees, who it says could suffer "heinous crimes" at the hands of Sudanese security services.
In a statement, it also expressed "grave concern" over the fate of around 3,000 Sudanese who are still in Jordan seeking refugee status. It blamed Sudan's government for the current situation, saying its "policy of war and repression" drives Sudanese to flee, despite the dangers.
Pro-government television said 150 of the deported had arrived at Khartoum airport, adding that they were treated with dignity.
