A Brazilian TAM airlines passenger plane bound for Sao Paulo has returned to Madrid because of a bomb threat that proved to be a hoax.

A spokeswoman for Spain's AENA airport authority said the plane returned to Madrid airport early Tuesday. She said some 300 passengers were evacuated and taken to hotels.

AENA said police inspected the aircraft and found no bomb.

TAM said in official tweets the flight affected was JJ8065, which left Madrid on Monday evening.

The AENA official spoke on condition of anonymity in keeping with company regulations.
