SYDNEY – An Australian court has ordered a British consumer goods company to remove several versions of a popular painkiller from stores in Australia after ruling that the company misled consumers about their effectiveness.
The Federal Court ruled on Monday that Reckitt Benckiser deceived Australians by selling Nurofen painkillers that were marketed to relieve specific ailments, such as back pain, when all of the products contained an identical amount of the same active ingredient.
Australia's consumer watchdog launched the court action in March. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission argued that consumers were being tricked into thinking that the four products were designed to treat a specific type of pain, when they were all the same.
The court gave Reckitt Benckiser three months to remove the products from Australian stores.
