Poland adds military guards to monthly remembrances of president killed in 2010 plane crash

WARSAW, Poland – Poland's new defense minister has added five military guards to monthly ceremonies held by the now-ruling party in honor of former member President Lech Kaczynski and 95 others ever since they were killed in a 2010 plane crash in Russia.

Antoni Macierewicz has decided that starting on Thursday, military guards will assist ceremonies held on the 10th day of each month in Warsaw, the Defense Ministry said Thursday.

The addition of five military guards gives state status to the observances.

The ruling Law and Justice party is led by Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the late president's twin brother, who has led remembrance ceremonies at Warsaw's cathedral and before the Presidential Palace ever since the crash near Smolensk airport on April 10, 2010. The private observances always gathered party members and followers.
