Here's a new cost-cutting plan: Get a private jet.

The British government says plans to convert an air-to-air refueling plane for official use by Prime Minister David Cameron and other top figures would actually save taxpayers money by cutting long-haul charter costs.

Officials said Thursday the refitting of the A330 Voyager for use by the prime minister, the royal family and other senior ministers will substantially reduce air travel costs.

Former Prime Minister Tony Blair had proposed having a jet made available for prime ministerial use but the plan was scrapped by his successor, Gordon Brown.
