The self-professed "monster" who admitted to police that he attacked and disemboweled his girlfriend because she called out her estranged husband's name during sex pleaded not guilty on Monday to the horrific murder.
The South Florida Sun Sentinel reported 24-year-old Fidel Lopez pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder and sexual battery.
Sunrise police said Lopez called 911 last month, saying his girlfriend was having trouble breathing.
Officers responding to the apartment said they found Lopez crying in the bathroom next to 31-year-old Maria Nemeth's body.
Police say Lopez initially told investigators that the couple had been having sex when Nemeth went into the bathroom, vomited and collapsed.
After further questioning, Lopez revealed that he became enraged with Nemeth when she called out her estranged husband's name and that he attacked her and disemboweled her.
While neighbors of Lopez said they were shocked by the crime, they were not surprised that he snapped.
"He didn’t know how to behave," one neighbor, Ismary Suarez, told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "He didn’t make friends with anybody."
