The Ukrainian defense ministry says one soldier was killed and two were injured on Tuesday in eastern Ukraine in violation of a month-long ceasefire between government and rebel forces.

It was the first government loss in fighting in a month as the cease-fire announced on Sept. 1 has largely held and most of the casualties have been incurred in the past weeks from soldiers stepping on land mines.

The defense ministry said Wednesday the Russia-backed separatists used grenade launchers against their positions in Avdiivka, near the rebel stronghold of Donetsk.

Rebels reported one man killed and two injured on Saturday in an attack on their positions around Donetsk.

Over 8,000 people have died in the conflict since it began in April 2014, according the United Nations.
