WARSAW, Poland – A spokesman for the Polish army says the nation is gradually raising the number of reservists put through training, amid heightened security concerns.
Col. Tomasz Szulejko told The Associated Press on Wednesday that a draft government decision calls for some 14,000 contracted reserve troops and an estimated 15,500 less-experienced reservists to go through military training next year. In each group, the number is more than 1,000 higher than this year, which already saw an increase over 2014. The figures still need to be approved by the Cabinet.
Lt. Col. Artur Golawski, spokesman for the army Operational Command, said the government's decision is dictated by an assessment of security threats and the situation in the region.
Poland is concerned over the armed conflict across its border, in eastern Ukraine.
