  • MAYWOOD, CA - MAY 17: A police car drives down a residential street marked to be dug up for service with shorthand letters for "underground service alert" on May 17, 2006 in the Los Angeles-area city of Maywood, California. According to reports, the Maywood City Council has declared the municipality a "sanctuary" for illegal immigrants. The city has done away with the police department's traffic division after receiving complaints that officers were targeting illegal immigrants which has made it more difficult for police to tow cars whose owners do not have driver's licenses. The city also officially opposed a proposed federal law that would have criminalized illegal immigration and forced local police to enforce immigration law. Approximately 96 percent of the city's population of about 29,000 is Latino and more than half are foreign-born. (Photo by David McNew/Getty Images)

A Connecticut man has been charged for allegedly leaving his 3-year-old son in his car overnight.

Bridgeport police say 22-year-old Jeffrey Mejias Jr. is free on $20,000 bond on a charge of risk of injury to a child.

Officers responded Sunday after a neighbor noticed a young child crying inside a car.

The child was taken to Bridgeport Hospital where he was cleaned and fed.

The Connecticut Post reports that Mejia told police he was driving home intoxicated with the boy in the car when he got a flat tire. He left the car with the boy inside, walked home and fell asleep.
