UNITED NATIONS – The U.N. is not naming countries whose peacekeepers face a wave of sexual misconduct accusations in Central African Republic because member states this summer quietly delayed the U.N. chief's plan to identify alleged perpetrators.
The U.N. General Assembly in June adopted a resolution that in part singled out Ban Ki-moon's intention to name countries when allegations are credible. The resolution asked Ban to "engage in consultations with member states, in particular troop-contributing countries" over reporting sexual abuse and exploitation cases.
The peacekeeping mission in Central African Republic has been hit by more than a dozen allegations of sexual abuse, and Ban last week fired the mission's leader.
The deputy head of mission told reporters Thursday that alleged victims are as young as 11.
She says no one has been convicted.
