ACCRA, Ghana – Ghana's health minister says the government is going to bring in about 170 Cuban doctors to work in health facilities amid a doctors' strike.
Health Minister Alex Segbefia said Wednesday that several people have died without proper emergency attention.
The doctors, who are members of the Ghana Medical Association, have been on strike since Aug. 7 to back their demand for better working conditions, including salaries, allowances and benefits. The government says the strike is illegal and will only negotiate when they get back to work.
Staff at the police and military hospitals that have remained open in the capital say they have been stretched thin.
Segbefia says there is no set date for the doctors to arrive, but plans have begun.
