The official Saudi Al-Ekhbariya news channel says a mosque bombing in the southwestern city of Abha has killed 17 people.

A Saudi Interior Ministry official told the Associated Press that the bomb ripped through a mosque on Thursday that was being used by security officials.

The official, who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press, says that the mosque belongs to an Interior Ministry emergency services' post in Abha. The official could not immediately confirm if the mosque was part of an Interior Ministry compound.
