HANOI, Vietnam – U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is in Vietnam, wrapping up a five-nation tour of the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

Kerry arrived in Hanoi on Thursday after stops in Egypt, Qatar, Singapore and Malaysia.

The Vietnam war veteran will mark this year's 20th anniversary of the restoration of U.S.-Vietnamese diplomatic relations and meet Vietnamese officials on Friday.

Despite the resumption of ties and a surge in U.S.-Vietnam trade, education and cultural exchanges, Washington remains concerned about Vietnam's poor human rights record. U.S. officials said Kerry would be raising that issue and calling for improvements.

Officials say Kerry will encourage Vietnam on implementation of a Pacific Rim trade pact and reiterate the U.S. commitment to helping the communist nation protect and patrol its territorial waters.
