A French appeals court has ordered the release of the daughter of a South Korean businessman believed to be linked to a deadly ferry disaster, pending a decision on whether to extradite her.

The court in Versailles on Tuesday ordered Yoo Somena freed after 13 months behind bars. Her lawyers say she is to remain under judicial supervision and cannot leave the Paris region before a September extradition hearing.

Yoo Somena, the 48-year-old daughter of late billionaire Yoo Byung-eun, is suspected by South Korean authorities of embezzling $7.3 million in 2004-2013.

Yoo Byung-eun's family owns the parent company of a ferry that sank in 2014, leaving more than 300 people dead. Authorities allege that corruption likely contributed to the accident.

The extradition request was not linked to the ferry disaster.
