Prosecutors in Ukraine says a pair of government soldiers has been detained on suspicion of killing two women that allegedly sympathized with armed separatists in the east.

The Donetsk region prosecutor's office said in a statement Wednesday that the two soldiers broke into the women's home in the village of Luhanske earlier this week and fatally shot them. The women were a mother and daughter, aged 77 and 45.

Luhanske is in government hands but lies close to the front line with rebel forces.

Inhabitants of government-held areas in the conflict-stricken east frequently complain of mistreatment from Ukrainian soldiers. Ukrainian authorities say they investigate claims of abuse.

The United Nations estimates that the war in Ukraine has claimed at least 6,454 lives since it broke out last April.
