BUCHAREST, Romania – Romania's president says he needs to closely examine legislation approved by Parliament granting supplementary pensions to lawmakers, following criticism of the proposal.
Parliament voted 303-124 on Tuesday approving extra pensions based on time lawmakers serve in the legislature.
President Klaus Iohannis said Wednesday he will review the legislation before deciding whether to sign it into law.
Opposition lawmakers say the measure is a way for the ruling party to win the loyalty of a range of lawmakers after Prime Minister Victor Ponta was put under a corruption probe, damaging his credibility.
According to the measure, lawmakers will receive between 1,500 and 4,600 lei (340 and 1,025 euros) a month, much more than the average pension of 200 euros.
Lawmakers argue that they are unable to work during their mandates.
