TRIPOLI, Libya – A report by Human Rights Watch alleges torture and abuse are rampant in prisons under the control of Libya's internationally recognized government and allied forces in the country's east.
The report released Wednesday claims many detainees were tortured to extract confessions, while others didn't receive medical care or family visits.
The report based its findings on visits to detention facilities in the eastern cities of Benghazi and Bayda over a period of four months from January to April. Human Rights Watch said it interviewed more than 70 detainees.
The report quoted Libyan officials acknowledging the country's justice system had collapsed. They promised to investigate.
