KARACHI, Pakistan – A jail official says the scheduled execution of a Pakistani death-row prisoner whose family says was 14 years old when he was convicted has been stayed for a fourth time.
Liaquat Khoso said early Tuesday that the order to stay Shafqat Hussain's execution was received just hours before he was scheduled to hang in Karachi Central Jail.
Hussain was to be executed in connection with the 2004 killing of a seven-year-old. His family and lawyers say he was only 14 at the time of the alleged crime and claim he was tortured until he confessed.
Authorities say the execution was halted this time after his conviction was challenged anew in the country's Supreme Court.
