A security official in Saudi Arabia says a soldier has been killed and another wounded in a gunfight with Shiite Houthi rebels along the kingdom's southern border with Yemen.

The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because he was not authorized to speak to journalists. No further details were given about where or when the fighting took place.

A Saudi-led coalition launched airstrikes against the Iran-allied Houthi rebels in Yemen last month. At least seven other Saudi soldiers have been killed in separate clashes this month along the border. Saudi troops, including a new deployment from the kingdom's National Guard, largely are positioned in the regions of Najran and Jizan.

The U.N. says the violence in Yemen amid the airstrikes has killed some 550 civilians.
