BUCHAREST, Romania – Hundreds of sheep and cattle farmers in Romania are holding anti-government protests, complaining that state agricultural subsidies are too low and often delayed.
Farmers from around Romania gathered Thursday outside government headquarters in Bucharest, some dressed in sheep skins and blowing long horns. The protest created traffic chaos in one of the busiest areas of the Romanian capital.
Protesters are angry that milk subsidies were eliminated April 1. The farmers say that may lead to widespread closures of Romanian dairy farms that are unable to compete with cheap milk imports.
Prime Minister Victor Ponta urged the agriculture ministry to pay its outstanding subsidies, saying there were funds available.
The protesters have demanded talks with the government and threatened more protests during the Orthodox Easter holiday.
