A Danish court has sentenced a 67-year-old man to life in prison for shooting dead a lawyer and seriously wounding the father of his 3-year-old grandchild inside a courthouse.

Jorgen Saugsted confessed to killing Anders Lindholt and seriously wounding his daughter's former partner on Sept. 16 in connection with a custody dispute at the Bailiff's court in Copenhagen. The partner's name and condition were not immediately known.

Defense lawyer Meretee Stagetorn said Thursday's ruling was "harsh," adding the defense had not yet decided whether to appeal the sentencing.

In Denmark, life sentences generally mean serving 16 years in prison.
